Caffeine Detox: 2 Recipes For Youthful Skin That Take the Place of Coffee

This year I’ve committed to a caffeine detox — cutting my caffeine consumption to basically zero, and let me tell you, it wasn’t an easy undertaking. At the beginning I had all the withdrawal symptoms: the headaches and irritability were pretty serious. I’d made the decision for a couple of reasons: but the biggest inspiration was coming across an article about Jennifer Lopez’s anti-aging tips — toward the top of the list: no alcohol, no caffeine. Her skin is on another level, so yes, I’ll have what she’s having.

I was already on the no alcohol train, but man, kicking the coffee was going to be tough. I decided then that while quitting caffeine might be difficult the benefits to my overall health, and the hydration I expected to see in my skin, would be worth it. There’s other benefits outside of those associated with anti-aging of course: my day to day anxieties have decreased, I sleep like a rock, and my energy stays steady throughout the day.

I was never an energy drink person, but my coffee love was serious, and when I quit drinking alcohol a few years ago I noticed my coffee intake went up. When friends would order a second mimosa at brunch, I’d have another cup of coffee, and after dinner drinks for everyone else became a shot of espresso for me. I admit, I still enjoy sipping on a cup of decaf in the morning, but I’ve found two great substitutes that give me the energy to keep the day going without making that midday reach for a cup of joe.

These two drinks have become a part of my wellness routine: a Cacao Avocado Smoothie and Turmeric Golden Milk. For me I love the smoothie as an afternoon pick me up, and Golden Milk is deliciously satisfying any time of day.

My recipes are below!

Adaptogenic Cacao Smoothie

The base of this smoothie starts with avocado and bananas. Not only are avocados and bananas delicious, they are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Avocados are also a source of healthy fats that can keep our hair, nails and skin looking youthful.

The antioxidant rich cacao makes this the perfect uplifting smoothie to start to the day or to blend up as a mid-afternoon treat (and bonus! It’s gluten free!). The cacao blend I use comes from a brand that includes US grown adaptogenic mushrooms including: Reishi Cordyceps, Lions Mane, Agaricus, Shiitake, Maiitake and Chaga.

Here’s the recipe:

  • 1/2 avocado

  • 1 banana

  • 1 tablespoon of Anima Mundi Mushroom Mocha Milk

  • a cup of water, or non dairy milk if you prefer a creamier smoothie

Blend the ingredients together, and voila!

Here's a time-saving tip when it comes to smoothie making: when you're in a rush just put it in the fridge. I like to batch out my smoothies and save a little extra. If I'm on the morning grind, I'll use yesterday's leftovers. It doesn't get much easier than that.

Turmeric Golden Milk Recipe

I love how the rootiness of the turmeric gives me the same satisfaction as the taste of a coffee bean. I add blue lotus flower tea to my recipe - the effects of this plant are euphoric, while helping to 'cool' down the nervous system and promote a feeling of relaxation the whole body. The caffeine content? Well, zero.

Golden Milk Latte - ouiwegirl.com
  • 1/2 cup almond or coconut milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric paste**

  • 1 teaspoon with Anima Mundi Flower of Intuition Tea

  • 1 piece ginger, unpeeled, thinly sliced

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

  • ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper

Whisk coconut milk, turmeric paste, blue lotus flower, ginger, honey, coconut oil and 1/2 cup filtered water in a small saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors combine, about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs and top with a dash of cinnamon or cayenne.

** turmeric paste is a mixture of 1/4 cup of dried turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper and 1/2 cup filtered water - heated and then stored in the refrigerator in a glass jar

So what do you think you guys? Easy does it? I'm amazed sometimes by how much better my nervous system is feeling throughout the day with these beautiful drinks taking the place of coffee. I'd love to hear from you guys on your easy tips to keep that wellness routine in check, because aren't we all learning new things everyday?

Wanderfully yours,

Andi
