5 Summer Beauty Essentials Taking the Front Row in My Beauty Cabnit

This season is truly all about fun in the sun: from pool days to festival days, cookouts and park days with champagne - the Summer is all about time outdoors with friends. As someone that spent a decade of my life working in beauty and wellness I'm constantly investigating what's new on the market. I receive more beauty box subscriptions each month (focusing on clean beauty is a must) than I probably need (just ask my partner who wonders on the regular what in the world I could possibly do with another bottle of oil). As a collection of holistic beauty essentials and some luxury level goodies too I've decided it's time to round up my Summer essentials.

Read on.

So after way too many years in the sun I've recently had a little skin cancer scare. The Supergood Glow Stick is the first thing I think about applying before I leave the house. It'll give you that that vacation glow while still protecting your skin with SPF 50.

I've received this kit from Carbon Coco in the Spring. It took me a little time to get into it... Honestly I'd heard about using charcoal to whiten teeth but wasn't yet sold. However, the claim to remove stains without toxic chemicals sounded good so I decided to give it a whirl. After that first couple of uses I was all in. It naturally whitens, polishes, strengthens enamel and detoxifies without any chemicals and added nasties.

Murumuru butter is an ingredient I already was fairly familiar with. It's sourced from trees native to the Amazon basin, harvested by locals and is super good for moisture retention. Couple that with one of my favorite essential oil aromas, rose, and this was a quick winner. A brand who has a mission of showing respect for our planet by being accountable for, and working to reduce the carbon footprint also makes this a serious favorite.

Soul Addict was founded just within the last year by a former Oui We team member! Laura, who now resides in Western Asheville on her family farm (where she's growing hemp on the same land in which she grew up) has a mission of creating zen inducing CBD wellness products. As a new inductee into the CBD wellness club, I'm a big fan. Being real: I smoked plenty in my teen years but that was nothing like this raw, small batch & high vibrational dark chocolate. It's truly a perfect way to add a little bliss to the end of the day.

How could I not include a travel texture spray?! The second it's warm enough to even dream of beach days I start planning my transition into full mermaid vibes. This spray is step 1. This spray adds instant volume, beachy waves and shine. It's vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, color safe with UV protection, and formulated without sulfates, parabens, mineral oil, or petroleum.

So there we have it! That's what's topping my list so far this season my babes. Cheers to a happy Summer with glowing, healthy skin, hair and so much more!

New Traditions Party: Eat Healthy on Game Day

Lately I've been thinking a lot about traditions. Traditions — a special moment in life that you can carry along with you and pass along too. I  have a friend that started a Friday tradition, she and I and a group of friends get together every Friday - same place, same time - even if just for an hour to catch up on the week. I look forward to that time so much, and honestly, when I'm traveling, it's one of the things I miss the most.

New Traditions Party

As the holidays have come and gone (and as Mardi Gras season approaches in New Orleans) traditions are on my mind again... I've started to notice the little things we do to mark the arrival of an event.  A good example: in New Orleans, there's so many things that we do as Carnival approaches, the foods we eat, the music we play... all of those things count as traditions. Since I spent so much time home over the holiday there's another tradition that I found myself participating in, and seriously, you couldn't guess this one if you tried. 😉

Here's a hint: it's an activity that takes over eeevvvverything on Sundays... involves lots of food and dressing up and energy and excitement! Got it? Yes, FOOTBALL! (Okay so the dress up part is a stretch, but wearing team colors is a tradition in itself!)

I'll be back home again for the big game weekend and all of that energy got me thinking  - there are countless ways to throw a good party - but how about throwing a healthy football party AND! how much fun would it be to start a tradition of hosting a "New Traditions" party?! Besides it's a good excuse to have friends and family over on a game day am I right?

Whether your guests are football fans or not, there's joy simply in getting your people together to enjoy each other. As I started planning my own "New Traditions" party I started thinking ... what's are my traditions? What band is always on my party playlist (for me it's Hall & Oats), what healthy snacks do I always include (for me it's Snack Factory® Pretzel Crips®, Late July® Tortilla Chips and Kettle Brand® Potato Chips) what drinks do I make, and what activities can I carry over from party to party?

I love making quick vegan dips too, to elevate my snack game (quick and easy options):

No Dairy Cilantro Dill Dip (for the Pretzels, but really this can go with any crunchy snack and I've listed out the recipe for you at the close of this post)

Mint & Berry Chutney (for the Potato Chips // I keep mint in my kitchen always and add to my mama-in-laws chutney or jams, you can always mix in to a store bought chutney too)

Lentil & Pinto Bean Dip (for the Tortilla Chips // I pull herbs straight from herb garden to chop and stir in)

To help you get started on creating your own new traditions, I listed out some of my ideas below and quite a few of these are good for your body too!

Get outside - Before the game begins play a game of capture the flag or touch football out on the front lawn.

Halftime Dance Party - At halftime crank up the tunes and get everyone moving. It's extra fun to pretend to be a back up dancer for whoever is performing the halftime show.

Commercial Bingo - Make a simple bingo sheet, cross off a square when you see specific companies' commercials. The commercials are a part of the fun of the game right?!

Host a cook-off - Or a cocktail contest. I love having friends in the kitchen, and it'll keep those that care a bit less about the game engaged too.

Do you have a game day tradition of your own, or thinking of starting one? Tell me all about it in the comments below!

Happy, Healthy, Stress Less Mornings

If you read the title of this post and had the gut reaction of "yeah, definitely no - I'm not a morning person... I have to set the alarm 3 times and sleep until the very last second before I'm literally peeling out of the door, mornings are neeeeever easy" I promise we've likely got a lot more in common than you think.

Happy Healthy Stress Free Mornings

So let's start with calling it like it is: most of us, I'd bet, are not morning people. Like for real, does ANYONE like getting out of their warm, cozy bed in the morning to get out in the world and adult? I mean yeah, sure maaaaybe on Sunday when it's brunch day, but for most of us, the next destination past the shower and maybe the coffee shop is either work or school - with maybe a stop for an errand or two along the way. None of that sounds like an exceptionally great time to me at 8 o'clock in the morning.

But then, we've all read the stories about how successful people rise before dawn, do an hour of meditation, yoga, jogging or marathon training (you catch my drift) and then eat their healthy breakfast and head off to conquer the day. Duuuuude, I envy those people, but I am definitely not one of them.

To be real, I do like to take a morning yoga class, however, I'm a writer - so if I choose to take a 10 a.m. class, it means I'll be burning the midnight oil that night, and hey - I'm okay with that. But for the purpose of this post, I'm intending to share tips with you that'll give you a happy a.m. glow and allow you to get going while feeling stress free, in time to make that morning meeting (with time to spare).

The only thing that'll get me out of bed a few minutes early.

The only thing that'll get me out of bed a few minutes early.

I shared a post earlier this year about my heart health routine while traveling. I don’t typically introduce new routines or plans into my life that I know I just won’t stick to - however it’s not an option for me to skip days of wellness. I’m fully committed to self care, so in that post I shared the absolute musts on my daily routine, no matter where in the world I might be traveling.

Those 3 absolute musts:

  • daily yoga
  • a smoothie a day
  • a supplement plan

Now that I'm spending a bit more time at home, I've been finding ways to expand on my wellness plan and since I'm definitely not an early riser - I've focused on ways to incorporate little moments of happy, healthy living into my morning routine.

Here's 3 ways to start your day on the right foot, and you can do all of this in under 30 minutes, I promise.

1. She Likes to Move It, Move It:

Movement of any kind helps get the blood flowing. My favorite way to get the day going is with a walk in nature. I like a bit of structure in my yoga routine, however, in the morning, there's something extra spirit lifting about being outside, while the air is crisp and the world is just starting to stir. The variety of route or location creates a feeling of newness and since it's about getting the body going, it doesn't have to be a jog. Often I get dressed for the day, and on my way to my first destination I'll take a 15 minute detour to my favorite park. I'll hop out of the car, explore for 15 minutes, and something as simple as that can be a true meditative moment for me.

Nature Walk

Some days I'll bring along a chilled out playlist, pop on my headphones and zen out.

If there isn't enough time to detour to the park I'll take those 15 minutes and dance in my living room and end with some meditative breathing (the last song on my playlist is always one I can get re-centered to). Here's the playlist I've been using this week.

2. Freshen It Up:

The next must-do in my wellness routine is the daily morning smoothie. Something I've added to my at home ritual is a morning turmeric tea. I have recipes for both below and here's a hint when it comes to smoothie making: when you're in a rush just freeze it. I like to batch out my smoothies and save a little extra. If I'm on the morning grind I'll use yesterday's leftovers. Here's a regular go to recipe:

Avocado Berry Smoothie

1/2 avocado blended with yesterday's berries. The berry mix is this (frozen and saved):

  • a handful raspberries
  • a handful blueberries
  • a cup of water or almond milk (if your preference is a creamier smoothy)

It doesn't get much easier than that.

I've also committed to reducing my caffeine intake so while I do like a little coffee in the morning on occasion, I've started drinking turmeric golden milk as a substitute. The rooty-ness of the turmeric somehow gives me the same satisfaction as the taste of a coffee bean and the caffeine intake? Well: zero. If I'm really needing a little pick me up I'll add a little black tea to the recipe below.

Heart Healthy Morning

Golden Milk Recipe

  • 1/2 cup almond or coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric paste**
  • 1 piece ginger, unpeeled, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ground cinnamon or cayenne pepper

Whisk coconut milk, turmeric paste, ginger, honey, coconut oil and 1/2 cup filtered water in a small saucepan. Reduce heat and simmer until flavors combine, about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs and top with a dash of cinnamon or cayenne.

** turmeric paste is a mixture of 1/4 cup of dried turmeric, 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper and 1/2 cup filtered water - heated and then stored in the refrigerator in a glass jar

3. One for You, One for Me

Here's where the supplements come in.

Nature Made Fish Oil
Actually there's more than one supplement on my list, however, there's a few that are especially good for heart health. I'm writing this post in partnership with Nature Made® and the Nature Made® Fish Oil 1200mg One Per Day is my go to for heart healthy omega-3s. The fish oil supply only comes from wild caught ocean fish, not farm raised fish.

Here's the full report from them on the benefits:

So what do you think you guys? Easy does it? I'm amazed sometimes by how much better I feel when making these practices a part of my daily routine. I'd love to hear from you guys on your easy tips to keep that wellness routine in check because aren't we all learning new things everyday?

Wanderfully yours,
