A Deep Dive Into Human Design Projectors

Discovering Human Design and finding out you're a Projector can be like dropping a bombshell in your life. You may feel immediate resonance and understanding as if this has been your life story. You may also resist finding out you are a "non-energy" type, having lived your whole life running around like a Generator.

This is a deep dive into the enigmatic world of Human Design Projectors, from their aura to their signature, via famous Projectors, strategy, mantra, and the not-self theme.

What is Human Design?

Before we dive deep into the world of Projectors, let's briefly revisit the fundamentals of Human Design. Human Design is a system that combines elements of astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah, and the Hindu-Brahmin chakra system to create a comprehensive map of an individual's energy and life purpose.

Ra Uru Hu developed it in the late 20th century and has gained a devoted following for its unique insights into human nature. One of the core principles of Human Design is classifying individuals into five distinct types: Generators, Manifestors, Projectors, Reflectors, and Manifesting Generators.

Each type has its own set of characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Projectors, our focus here, represent around 20% of the population and play a crucial role in guiding and managing the energy flow of the collective.

The Unique Characteristics of Projectors

Energy Sensitivity

Projectors are highly attuned to the energy of the people and environments around them. They have a natural ability to read the energy dynamics. They often sense when something is off or an opportunity is ripe for action.

Wisdom and Insight

Projectors are wise beyond their years. Their deep insights and analytical skills make them excellent advisors, mentors, and strategists. They have the gift of seeing the bigger picture and can provide invaluable guidance to others.

Non-Sacral Beings

Unlike Generators and Manifesting Generators, Projectors don't have a consistent source of sacral energy. This means they should try to avoid trying to keep up with those types of constant busyness and workaholic tendencies. Instead, Projectors thrive when they honor their need for rest and rejuvenation.

Famous Human Design Projectors: Illuminating the Path

Since Projectors are still a relatively new type on the planet (since 1781), we only have a few role models of living as one. To better grasp the essence of Projectors, let's explore the lives of a few famous Projectors who have made their mark on the world.

  1. Carl Jung: The famous Swiss psychiatrist and psychoanalyst Carl Jung is often speculated to be a Projector. His pioneering work in psychology and his role as a guide and mentor to countless individuals align with the Projector archetype.

  2. Oprah Winfrey: The media mogul Oprah Winfrey is also a Projector. Her ability to connect with people on a deep level through her talk shows and media empire is a testament to the power of her aura.

  3. Eleanor Roosevelt: The former First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt, is considered by some to be a Projector due to her advocacy for human rights and her role as a diplomat and advisor. Her ability to guide and inspire others towards positive change is reminiscent of Projector qualities.

These famous Projectors exemplify the power of waiting for the invitation and using their unique aura to positively guide and influence the world.

The Aura of Projectors: Focused

In human design, your Type describes how your aura functions and interacts with the world around you. Projectors have a "focused" aura—directly penetrating another person's G-centre (the center of self and identity).

Yes, it does have a subtle sexual undertone, which is why I like to joke that Projectors have Big Penetrator Energy. This aura is not designed to attract energy passively like a Generator's aura. It is more like a vacuum, drawing people and opportunities toward them when recognized correctly.

You can feel their laser beam aura on your back, like somebody is watching you closely. This aura tends to amplify their natural gift of perception, making them keen observers of human dynamics and systems.

Projectors Aren’t Here To Work

In a world dominated by energy types (Generators and Manifestors), Projectors can feel like aliens. As a society, we are so profoundly identified with work and being busy that Projectors can get swept up with their open sacral, never knowing when enough is enough.

Unlike Generators, if a Projector goes to sleep exhausted, it will wake up exhausted, and the cycle repeats. This is why Projectors need to lay before they are tired, to release the built-up sacral energy and relax before falling asleep.

*Important note: Projectors need to sleep in their aura, which is recommended for all aura Types but especially VITAL for Projectors. This depends on how radical you want to go.

But understand that you take in the energy/definition of those you sleep next to, which means you automatically wake up with conditioning in your system.

Projectors work differently than we have been conditioned to believe we should. They are technically not here to "work," period. Instead, projectors are here to be compensated for their guidance, intellectual resources, and for sharing what they see.

Again, nothing happens overnight, so if you are a Projector working a 40-hour week, it doesn't mean you have to quit your job tomorrow.

You can start by cutting back energy expenditure where you can and wherever your authority guides you while incorporating more rest into your daily routine. It's a gradual change that will naturally happen as you align with your strategy and authority.

Strategy for Projectors: Wait for the Invitation

One of the core tenets of Human Design is the concept of strategy. Each Type has a unique strategy to guide its decision-making and interaction with the world. For Projectors, their strategy is simple yet profound: "Wait for the Invitation."

Many Projectors will hear their strategy "wait for the invitation" and see it as a death sentence. Wait? For an invitation? Surely, that will take too long. How is anything going to get done? What if I never get invited to anything? Following one's strategy helps eliminate resistance on the material plane.

Almost everybody has been raised to be Manifestors (ironically, except for Manifestors) to go after what we want and "make things happen." As a result, we often initiate based on mental fears surrounding survival and what our personality thinks we "should" do or want.

These cognitive beliefs are often built on the conditioning of our open centers and from what media/peers/society has raised us to believe. To be a Projector is to let life come to you.

Imagine when you exit out of the womb, you have a neon sign pasted to your forehead reading "INVITE ME!". This is literally built into your aura, so it is simply a matter of allowing it to function correctly.

The invitation is needed as a form of consent to preserve the Projector's energy. You DO NOT need an invitation to live your life — it is never meant to disempower you and leave you feeling like you can't take action on anything.

An invitation is needed for anything involving "the other": relationships, work, sharing your skills/insights/observations, and where you will live. The invitation must first come with proper recognition of who you are. Then, it must run through your inner authority before you decide whether that invitation is correct for you.

To be an empowered Projector means learning the power of saying "no": just because you received an invitation doesn't mean you have to accept it. It must always come with a fair exchange of energy, whether that be monetary compensation or something else that is immaterial/energetic.

Projectors do not have the energy to do something "just because" — everything about being a Projector is quid-pro-quo; there must be something in it for you. The initial invitation should be formal, recognized, and explicitly asking for YOU and your gifts.

Once an invitation has been established, it can be considered open — you do not have to wait for your friend to invite you to everything or have a difficult conversation with somebody. Can you ever apply for a job or make the first move as a Projector? Yes, you can.

However, you are not trying to convince them of your worth or manipulate yourself into something you are not (to get them to invite you). You are simply letting them know that you exist and laying out your skills/what you have to offer so they can return with a formal invitation.

What should I do WHILE I'm waiting?

As a Projector, sometimes there's an extended period between invitations. But waiting is not a passive process — it is not waiting for something to happen as you twiddle your thumbs on the couch. Waiting is the time to study and hone your skills.

Projectors are talented at mastering systems and are here to be recognized for their expertise as leaders in their field. The more a Projector invests in their studies, the more likely they will be recognized for what they offer.

In addition, you are here to enjoy life! Doing the things you love which fill you up is just as" "productive." Use the time to rest, replenish your energy, and prepare for the next invitation or opportunity to appear.

Mantra: Who is the other?

Each Type has a central question, and for Projectors, it's "Who is the other?" By their very nature, the Projector aura is focused outwards and is designed to recognize the other. They are not here to be introspective as they learn who they are through their relationships and interactions.

If you're a Projector learning Human Design, focus on studying the charts of the people around you in your life rather than solely using your own. Projectors cannot see each other correctly when their attention and focus are turned inward.

This isn't to negate looking after your own needs, as living by your authority is selfish in the best way possible. Still, to hone the Projector skills of recognition and guiding, you must learn how to understand the other.

The Not-Self Theme of Projectors: Bitterness

In Human Design, the not-self theme represents the state of being when individuals are not living in alignment with their true nature. For Projectors, their not-self theme often revolves around bitterness.

When Projectors try to initiate or force their way into situations without being invited, they can become bitter and frustrated. This bitterness signals that they are not operating according to their design. But I want to distinguish between the two types of bitterness that can arise.

The first kind is the all-pervasive, underlying bitterness from a lifetime's worth of initiating, pushing, and not getting any reward. This is the bitterness of someone deeply rooted in the not-self who hasn't discovered Human Design or started their deconditioning journey.

The second kind of bitterness is momentary and circumstantial, communicating to a Projector when an invitation or exchange needs reassessment. This arises when someone knows Human Design and understands how their Projector aura operates.

Recognizing and acknowledging this not-self theme is crucial for Projectors to realign with their true nature and embrace their role as guides and leaders. Bitterness is a helpful signpost; I never need to shame myself for it arising.

It allows me to look at what is not working for me and where I might need to have a conversation, make some adjustments, or withdraw from the invitation altogether. Always treat bitterness as a valuable indicator of how aligned you are with your energy as a Projector.

Signature: Success and Satisfaction

Just as each Type has a strategy and a not-self theme, they also have a signature—a state of being that indicates when they are living in alignment with their design. If bitterness leaves a sour taste in the mouth, then the signature theme of success makes everything so sweet.

For Projectors, their signature is success and satisfaction. No other type has a signature of success — just something to ponder on, especially since Projectors are not here to "work" in the way energy types are. In this case, success is measured more than just materially.

When Projectors are recognized, invited, and in harmony with their aura, they experience a deep sense of satisfaction and success in their endeavors. Success extends to work and guiding others, however, in relationships and every other aspect of life.

This is a sign that they are on the right path and fulfilling their role as guides and leaders. Success means genuinely living as a Projector: honoring your energy flow and capacity for output while still getting to have it all.

Projectors can slide through life, but they can only get there if they are committed to living in alignment with their strategy and authority. Of course, these two things can never tell you exactly where you will end up or what experiences you will have. But after all, the process — the journey — makes life so exciting.

The Takeaway: Human Design Projectors

Human Design Projectors are unique beings with a profound role in the tapestry of humanity. Their open and absorbing aura, and the strategy of waiting for the invitation all contribute to their ability to guide and lead others.

By understanding their not-self theme of bitterness and striving for their signature of success and satisfaction, Projectors can live in alignment with their true nature and fulfill their purpose in this world.

As we've explored the world of Human Design Projectors, from the famous figures who embody their essence to their unique strategy, mantra, not-self theme, and signature, we gain a deeper appreciation for the wisdom and guidance they offer humanity.

Projectors are the torchbearers of insight, and when they embrace their design, they illuminate the path for us all.
