Travel Highlights of 2014

As I cozy up in the Carolinas for the remainder of the Holidays a little feeling of nostalgia is creeping in. Last year at this time I was celebrating Oui We being a year old. I never in a million years would have dreamed of all of the beautiful experiences - love and dreams - that would be realized as the Earth and stars and moons, this blog and I all grew a year older.

Hold your iPhone though (that's what everyone at my house is doing right now) - I promise this won't be too sappy.

I mean, to maintain some Christmas sanity I'm live tweeting my family holiday time, for example:

So here we go, a round up in no particular order.

Sea, Girls

“Look at that sea, girls–all silver and shadow and vision of things not seen. We couldn’t enjoy its loveliness any more if we had millions of dollars and ropes of diamonds.” Spending my last days on the Mediterranean with one of my very best friends Christine wrapped up those 3 months in the sweetest way. The little moments out by the sea are simply the best, and a true reminder of letting the little things go. I don't think I've ever found a happier place.

Relaxing in Tarifa

On a weekend trip to Tarifa we spent the morning in a little beach community that was full of VW vans and surfer kids. Total boho hippie vibe, and of course I was ready to move right in.

Travel Diary: Valencia

It was at about this point in my travels that my eyes grew a little teary.... truly Valencia had the most fantastic views. Across the cove from this spot, eating paella and drinking sangria, there were little caves lining the mountainside, with villas looking down over the water. I wanted to swim straight across to the boats on the other side and join them.

 It Was All Yellow

It was a Friday, my baby sister Chelle was flying in from Paris and I absolutely couldn't wait to see her. I'd been pulling quite a few 10-15 hour work days finishing up the book and it was beyond perfect to have time with her.

Tales of the Alahambra

The architecture of the Alahambra: from the baths to the monastery, to the gardens, pools, and the fortress and then, of course, the palace... it took a full day of wandering to see it.  The canopies, archways and arabesques, and the detailing in the calligraphy, as I took it in, the depth of it was clear. No one could forget this place.

A Fashion Girl's Beach Festival Guide

Meanwhile stateside one of my favorite festivals of the whole year is Hangout Festival. Enjoying music (and your best people) in a hammock or on a beach blanket versus in a mud pit behind a sea of folding chairs is how to do a festival right. And if you follow on insta, you know how much fun my crew had that weekend.

Getting invited to MAGIC, the largest contemporary fashion trade show anywhere made for an out of this world three days in Vegas. Including designer appointments, trend hunting, speaking on panels and lots of running the floor in heels it was a whirlwind of a fantastic time.

Next we'll jet up to NY: first for the Billy Reid Men's Fall/Winter Show, which took place at the brilliantly gorgeous Refectory at the Highline Hotel.

Eyes Bright, Just Us Girls... at Disney!

On my way home from Spain I took a quick little detour with Hailee to Magic Kingdom. After 14 hours of travel, a long night of girl time catch up over a few too many whiskeys – at 7:15 a.m. we were the first kids at the park that day.

And lastly, one of the most fantastic experiences of my time in Spain happened in my final week there. The Feria de la Virgen de la Cruz which I found to be so much like Mardi Gras. Daily parades, all night dancing in the streets, food and cocktails on every corner... a whole community coming together to celebrate.

So there we have it! I hope you've enjoyed it all as much as I have. Thank you all so much for following along this year. It means so much to me to know you're there!

Now back to the regularly scheduled mimosas. (Dad, that's for you.)

One of the most fantastic experiences of my time in Spain happened in my final week there. The Feria de la Virgen de la Cruz, from my perspective, can only be likened to Mardi Gras. Daily parades, all night dancing in the streets, food and cocktails on every corner... a whole community coming together to celebrate.

Of course, the biggest difference was the attire.

As a girl that works in fashion I certainly understand getting dressed up. But this - this type of dress was on a different level. I couldn't help but follow these beautiful creatures around to get an up close view of these stunning dresses, each custom made for the woman who wore it. Similar to the dresses of the courts of Carnival, these garments were made for a singular occasion, and were impeccably crafted by the best couturiers.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves.

Here in New Orleans, this coming weekend we'll get a chance to have our own Spanish style celebration. On Friday night at the New Orleans Museum of Art join me and The Southern Coalition of Fashion & Design for ¡CELEBRACIÓN! NOMA, as we celebrate the final weekend of Behind Closed Doors: Art in the Spanish American Home, 1492-1898.

Ladies: wanna get that flamenco spirit without having to go all the way to Spain? it's about the ruffles, a heavy dose of flair and the boldest colors and tones. And, for the record - I am suggesting you invest in your lingerie. In my opinion pretty things underneath can make one feel absolutely stellar on the outside.  Here's a few things I'm loving.

Hasta luego my friends, hope to see you all Friday night!

Happy Friday! I am finally back to my real life in New Orleans, but before I made it home, I took a quick little detour with Hailee to Magic Kingdom. Kinda crazy, I know - but my flight from Spain arrived into Orlando and I decided that rather than hopping directly onto one more flight I'd rather spend a little time with one of my best girls and road trip home. So, Hailee agreed to meet me, under the condition that we pay a visit to see Mickey before getting on the road.

So there we were, after 14 hours of travel, a long night of girl time catch up over a few too many whiskeys - at 7:15 a.m. last Friday morning we were the first kids at the park.

One of the things I love about this girl, when she puts her mind to something it's game on. So with (almost) matching outfits (she found her super fly Mickey overalls at the hotel convenience store) and a mapped out game plan we went for it. By 9:30 a.m. we'd hit Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain and the Haunted Mansion, then we went straight for the Dole Whip, possibly my favorite part of the entire day. We took way too many selfies, laughed for a good 18 hours straight and had one of the best days ever.

All in all, I'm so glad she and I had the time together, as I just arrived back from Spain, she gets ready to leave for Paris in the next 2 weeks. What a whirlwind!

My suit is from American Apparel, and here's a few other similar styles I'm digging. What do you guys think about the high waisted suits? I find I'm always a little nervous to give it a shot, and then once I'm in it, I remember how much I love the style. Have a beautiful weekend you guys, much love and thank you for following along on my adventures through Spain. New Orleans is just a week away!

much love to Christine and Casey for the photos and time together in Spain!

Relaxing in Tarifa

Processed with VSCOcam with e3 preset Last weekend was another adventure as Christine, her boyfriend Casey, and my Spanish pals headed off to Tarifa. Tarifa is on the southern most tip of the coast of Spain, on the Strait of Gilbraltar with a direct view to Tangiers.

We spent the morning on the beach, in a little community that was full of VW vans and surfer kids. Total boho hippie vibe, and of course I was ready to move right in.

That afternoon we traveled past fields of bulls and through the windy roads into the village, to do a bit of the usual - shopping the markets and boutiques, and enjoying tapas, wine and coffee on repeat. The village was established in 1292, it's hard to even think that these little towns are some of the oldest in all of Europe.

Toward the end of the day, as the supermoon was rising, we had a close up view of Tangiers, directly across the port. What a surreal experience. Enjoy the photos, and see more over on Christine's page here! (I miss her already, btw, remember to love your friends to the moon and back, sometimes that's all we've got.)

Travel Diary: Valencia

Happy Friday my friends! As the weekend gets going I'm happy to share my photos from my trip to Valencia. I'm finding that in Spain, I'm saying often "well, this is the most beautiful place I've ever been." Or, actually "WTF, how can this be a real place?!" (That's more along the lines of how it really comes out).

Valencia is about a 6 hour drive from where I'm living here. And the drive itself is just gorgeous: there's fields of olive trees going on for mile upon mile and little pueblos with homes built right into the mountain side. On the way we made a stop through Altea. A hike to the top of the village gave a clear view of the destination ahead. So here are the photos from my time there! Enjoy!

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

En route to Valencia, at the tippy top of Altea in Alicante there lies a stunning church and a village square with little restaurants and taperias. The climb up the stairway was steep and so very worth it.

Processed with VSCOcam with e5 preset

Arriving at the home of the Fornes family.  The house, 3 stories high, has a blend of traditional Spanish and Moorish architecture.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

On the beach at Portitxol, the little structures across the way are fisherman's homes. They come out in the early a.m. and sell their catch directly to the 70 year old restaurant on the beach.

Processed with VSCOcam with e7 preset

When the woman at that 70 year old beach restaurant says she's making a rice but it'll take 3 hours - you wait. And this, is the result.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

It was at about this point that my eyes grew a little teary.... truly - the most fantastic view. Across the cove little caves line the mountainside, with villas looking down over the water. I wanted to swim straight across to the boats on the other side and join them.

Back in the village the "CAFETERIA" was quite different from the version I remember growing up.

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

After a hike through the mountain top, we travelled to another beach at Javea - full of little pools and cliffs.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset

On the beach at Javea, we took in the sunset with a glass of wine at the perfect little beach bar.

...the evening sky over Valencia...

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

At home that night, it occurred to me that while my little polaroid collection is growing, I only snapped three photos that day: 1 - the Portitxol beach 2 - The lobster tank at the restaurant and my beer 3 - A Fanta can chandelier.

Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

The visit ended with a fantastic dinner back at Carmine's home. She taught me about cognac, I taught her about selfies. This is the best photo we got, and one of the few in which my eyes are semi-open.

Cheers to the weekend you guys! Remind yourself to let your own wanderlust take you somewhere great!

The Secret Things (and a brief tour of Málaga)

923690_318580748266816_920482088_n"I want to be with those who know secret things or else alone." ~ Rilke

Hailee asked me this morning, at oh, 5 a.m. via a quick FB chat if I ever sleep in Spain.

My answer: "not well" ~ which thinking about it, doesn't seem to make good sense. This place is quiet and serene, and all of the stuff that should lend to a person actually having the best sleep of their life. I on the other hand, am finding that without all the distractions, I'm up all night thinking of a million trillion things I want to do and see, and all of the places I want to know. Like, not just "go" - but really know. Spending a month in a place you start to get it's intricacies, and the more time I have here the more I fall in love with it.

I hope you all are enjoying the travel photos, let me know if there's something more you'd like to see!

Today's photos are from two day trips to Málaga: shopping the Atarazanas Market, sipping wine and eating the most delicious tapas, wandering the alley ways and climbing to the top of the Roman Theatre and Gardens - there is so much to this city. It's the home of Picasso and a nominee for the 2016 European Capital of Culture Award.

925305_1452404328362998_1291152830_n

Shopping the market was one of my favorite moments here. The fish, cheese, olives and produce are the freshest and most delicious anywhere, and you can stop along the little bars in the corridors for drinks and tapas while you shop.

Also! I have to share a few snaps from the weekly beach adventures. Having Michelle here from Paris and giving her the tour of the Costa Del Sol beaches was the highlight of my weekend.

So much love to my new and dear friend Jami for being my guide this past week!

p.s. I write this blog ultimately as a place to capture time, I think. At first, the things that were inspiring me and the work, wares and faces of the fashion and creative industries of New Orleans... then it became a way to share the type of styling work I love to do. I expect it will always be that - in part; however, as I've had this experience in Spain, I'm intending to take new paths here which I'll share more of ...très bientôt.

Travel Diary: Gibraltar

"Nothing is yours except the essential things – air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky..."  ~ Cesare Pavese

I don't think I've ever felt that more than in Gibraltar.... And finally, I'm so happy to relive the experience by sharing these photos from my trip there a few weeks ago. The Rock of Gibraltar, on a clear day, is visible from my villa here. Since arriving in Spain, it was at the top of the list of things I didn't want to miss. It's the type of place that deserves a whole day of exploration.

2014-06-30 19.02.11

Arriving into the village a few things struck me. It's surprisingly a bit like New Orleans. There's an influence of Spanish and British architecture (in New Orleans, it's Spanish and French) and there's streets that reminded me a bit of Decatur Street - with tourists shops and knick knacks - and then a block or so off those streets hidden alley ways - the color and texture of the city.

After spending a few hours exploring the village, it was time to head to the top of the rock. Nothing could have prepared me for the feeling up there. And truly, these photos would never do it all justice. The vastness - being at the very tippy top and looking out onto the world was absolutely thrilling. It's wildly open. Hiking up through the siege tunnels, at the exterior of the moorish castle, there's no gates or walls holding you back from it all.

Back down on the edge of the village sits La Alameda, the Gibraltar Botanical Gardens. The children of the village decorated a scarecrow in honor of the World Cup. The gardens were quiet and beautiful, the paths wind along beneath The Rock Hotel.

The day ended at a lovely little Indian restaurant in the village called Saffron. The people were warm, and so welcoming and I'd go back for every second of that day a million times over.

I shared this photo on instagram, sitting on to the edge of the world, and fully in awe of it all. Happy girl. Amazing day.
