New Orleans Jazz Fest: Weekend 2 Recap

“New Orleans is the only place I know of where you ask a little kid what he wants to be and instead of saying “I want to be a policeman,” or “I want to be a fireman,” he says, I want to be a musician.” *

Looking back over the last few weeks of music in this city I'm reminded that one of the things I love most about the fest weekends is the after shows, the mid-festival parties, and the general electricity in the air. The music already pours into the street from almost every corner, and for a few weeks it's easy to go from the festival fairgrounds, to the after hours shows to the super late night shows and share that feeling with music lovers from all over the world. Last weekend I had days of literally seeing 4 acts at the fest and then 3 or so after hours.

It's a music filled marathon.

These photos are from the fairgrounds and the neighborhood surrounding it; I didn't snap any after show photos, those images are all filed away in my visual memory. And I ended up having to steal a few of these from Ben, he did a much better job than I at capturing the spirit of the festival.

I'll be heading out to Hangout next weekend and then Bonnaroo next month, so more music love to come. Before I go, over on insta I'll be giving away the Backstage Pass necklace by ReStrung Jewelry, a New Orleans jewelry company with pieces constructed from old guitar strings and semi-precious gemstones. (How cool is that?!)

In the meantime, enjoy re-living the festival weekend with me.

"It was a thunderous afternoon when Joe Cocker took the Woodstock stage forty-three years ago in a tie-dyed v-neck with his version of a skinny bootleg jean. The following morning, after Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young played through the night, Jimi Hendrix, in his now iconic fringe-tasseled cape, closed the weekend with “The Star-Spangled Banner."*

Love this shot of Joe Stark of Baby Bee in what I'd describe as a musical cowboy ensemble. Those boots, that Tonto style blanket-y caftan, that hat, he's killing it.

The whole weekend was full of sunshine, second lines and happy vibes from Canal Street to the fairgrounds.
