Oui We Adventures: L.A., Wine Country and Aspen

"woven like the hidden symbols on a treasure map, the path that will point to your final destination"

As I'm starting to settle in for my month in Nashville, I finally spent a little time going back through my photos from my August travels. I spent over half the month on the road, 5 cities over 4 weeks. Boulder, Los Angeles, Paso Robles (wine country), Aspen and then home again. The Boulder Trip was for my birthday and then just 3 days later I jetted back across the country for a little west coast adventure.

unnamed-24-880x880.jpg

4 days in L.A. visiting with some of my favorite friends, soaking up sunshine and the 70 degree weather had me wishing for more time there. Being able to go from hilly terrain to the ocean side in a matter of an hour feels perfect. Ben and I stayed in a sweet little house in the Hollywood Hills, stocked the kitchen and took a little time to relax when we could.

After a few days in L.A. we took a trip on the band tour bus out to wine country. The Vina Robles Amphitheatre at Paso Robles was incredible. A winery and a music venue all in one... I can't think of a better way to spend a day.

Btw, sleeping on a tour bus isn't quite as glam as it sounds.

No showers, highway rumble strips, and if you're me, you'll end up locking yourself in the bunks after too many wines at the winery. That's another story for another day I suppose.

From California I hopped a flight to Aspen for the Aspen Art Fair. Here's another not so glamorous travel moment....

En route to Aspen I experienced my first emergency landing... the plane was rerouted to an ittttttty bittttty airport about 2 hours from Aspen.

I've never been so happy to be on solid ground when that baby landed.

unnamed-22-880x880.jpg

Finally, half a day later in Aspen I was cozied up in the cutest little snow lodge on a breezy summer evening.

I spent the next several days experiencing the Aspen Art Fair, touring the galleries and the museums and enjoying the mountain air.

I'm finding the more I travel the more my style reflects the mood of the place.

I'm packing clothing and accessories that have symbolic meaning - my advice: no matter your style at home – glamour girl, classics lover, minimalist, sporty chic – when you’re on the road allow your mood, whims, fantasies and feelings to drive what you wear.

On the road you can be anyone you want. I find I go between:

Bourgeois Bohemian

Vintage Free Spirit

Gallery Girl on the Weekend

This coming week I'll share my road trip essentials. The T's, the denim, which bags to pack and outwear too... it is basically fall you know! I've got books and records for you too!

Come back for that and have a beautiful Sunday you guys!

Travel Diaries

road-trippin.jpg

A year after finishing my first book, I'm so excited (and a little nervous) to share that I'm underway with book number two (eeee!). I spent quite a bit of the year brainstorming (talking with my closest people on wine) about where two would take me...

what would it be about?

what story do I have to tell?

who's the girl that wants to read it?

And finally, with an open heart, I'm ready to tell you at least this much -- this little story will be a girl's guide to the best road trip of her life... (because I'm fairly certain that's what I'm living for).

It'll include the road trip necessities, routes for weekend travelers and those who are planning a bit more time on the road. There will be plenty of picnic baskets (the kind that'll chill champagne for late nights camp side), piles of woven blankets to keep cozy in the cool desert air, and all of the Polaroid snapshots along the way. Of course, it'll have music selections for long winding nights behind the wheel and a library of road trip reads for the bibliophiles like me.

As I've been preparing - and sharing my plan with my close friends - a few questions seem to come up again and again. So I'm sharing a few of those with you all here. I'd love to hear from you guys too... what's your favorite road trip memories, your essentials and all your favorite places to go?

Here's mine:

__________________

What is your favorite road trip memory?

I spent last summer in Spain. I was off on a day trip every weekend while living in a beautiful little seaside village. It was the most spectacular experience waking up overlooking the Mediterranean Sea everyday. The whole Summer was one long day dream. It's a reminder to me every day now how important these little travel diaries are.

What are your road trip essentials?

My headphones (I’m a music junkie, always searching for new playlists and albums), a portable vinyl player with a few new favorites records - Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes... and while I'm slightly biased... Grace Potter - all favorites on constant rotation.

I always pack a variety of sunnies and aromas. I love essential oils and natural scents, which are perfect for layering and can totally change your mood.

What's on the destination list for the fall?

I'd love to take a month or so and pile friends in the car and kick it out west. I spent a week on the West Coast this month - a few days in the Hollywood Hills, a day in Venice Beach, and a day in Wine Country - I'm dying to go back. I'd head up the PCH first with an extra suitcase in the car and spend a day shopping for vintage finds at the Rose Bowl Flea. From there I'd drive out to Joshua Tree and sleep under the stars.

Describe your perfect Saturday on the road.

A day by the water with friends, whether it’s a beach or an afternoon at the pool, I am a sun and sea lover. It’s even better followed by a leisurely afternoon cooking and catching up with no schedule or agenda.

What are your favorite fall pieces for traveling?

Upcycled denim:

I'm obsessed with upcycled denim overalls. I'm currently loving everything from New Orleans brand Holt McCall, and the hand embroidered pizza emblems are so cute.

Florals:

I love an artful approach to florals for any season. Realist depictions and those of the hand stitched and painted variety.

Hippie day dresses in a mini version:

I love the chic modern versions inspired by Talitha Getty's luxe approach to boho.

So with that I promise many more travel diaries to come!

Oui We Adventures: Nashville Travel Diary

unnamed6-880x880.jpg

This month I've had such fantastic opportunities to travel. I'm presently sitting in Chicago (last morning... can't believe I'm leaving as Lollapalooza is starting! Bad planning girl) and while I'm sitting here I'm excited to finally share my little peek at Nashville from a few weeks back.

Also! In big, awesome, super fun news! I'm heading back to Nash for September and I'll be there for a full month! I truly found Nashville to be one of the most pro towns, full of genuine people doing big things and I can't wait to get back.

In the meantime, here's a few snaps (via VSCO) from my visit and then a little round up of a few of my favorite places for coffee and eats. I'm certainly going to discover so much more being there for a month, and would love to hear recs if you've been there!

Weekend in Color

“Soon it got dusk, a grapy dusk, over tangerine groves and long melon fields; the sun the color of pressed grapes, slashed with burgandy red, the fields the color of love and Spanish mysteries.” ― Jack Kerouac, On the Road

One of the things I love about traveling is experiencing the colors of a place. I've had such beautiful opportunities to spend time exploring other places, to look deeply at what makes each of them special.

I wrote this a year ago after my adventure in Granada:

Last week I went on a road trip. Well, two. On the road I (was) alone in the back seat, headphones on prepared to take in the scenery of the drive through the Spanish countryside.

Honestly, as the road twisted along I began to feel slightly lost. Not in a ‘google maps is down’ type of way (which it was being so far away from anything but farm land and small villages) but more so, lost in a thought of memory and perception.

Basically this: I wondered, when you get so accustomed to something, something that’s so incredibly stunning, can you still see it for everything that it is? Or do we get used to something and stop noticing it’s depth and maybe… forget?

I sat back, quieted my inner chatter and reminded myself to let my eyes soak it in and to embed it in my memory like a child would. To remember.

This summer, as I've spent more time at home in New Orleans, and visiting cities closer to home, I'm reminding myself to enjoy the color of life even when staying nearby.

I'm heading off to Chicago today; looking forward to breathing the wind right in. In the meantime, here's a little snapshot of the colors of this past weekend in New Orleans.

Modeled after the Spanish style markets that I fell in love with last summer, this addition to the New Orleans Bywater neighborhood is a gem. Friday I took a moment to shop the fresh goodies at St. Roch Market.

The day was made to be one way. And only that.

I have nothing sad to write about, she said. And as easy as the breeze came pouring from the river the sun came, and kept on coming.

________

I've been a little quiet over here. Not so in real life. The pace, however, feels different.

Here's the approach: let it in

if / when it's showing itself to be a worthy companion.

"It" can be anything.

a he/she/they.

a feeling or experience.

a night / a day.

And here's me taking a little 6 month pulse sanity check on a quick little visit to NYC.

And then as the rain finally came I thought of what Camus said: "it pours tirelessly between high cubes of cement into avenues plunged suddenly into the darkness..."

Until next time NYC!

Travel Diary: Honolulu

Loves, After too many days I'm finally grounded back in New Orleans and sharing a few snaps from my time in Honolulu. I never go this long without posting, and I have to say - my life has taken some interesting new directions as of the recent months and I'm in a place of reseting. That reset feels good, different, scary on some days. I wrote at the beginning of the year about my "Sanity Maintenance Plan" and I'm reflecting back often to ensure I'm staying the course of that plan. I've taken a new job, have a new home, am surrounding myself with people that I can contribute to and that give that contribution back equally and I'm enjoying the quiet flow of life. (Who am I kidding, it's rarely quiet, but on the days that it is....)

The trip to Hawaii was timed perfectly; I traveled there to scout gallery locations and had an extraordinary experience along the way. I arrived after a quick trip to LA and was immediately taken by the ease and beauty of the pacific. I've visited before, however, there's nothing quite like the mountain view, the clouds floating overhead and the vibrancy of the turquoise waters.

Enjoy!

Important Orders

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Orders of importance. At least on Sundays. Which is when my little brother snapped these photos post Southern Design Week brunch.

1. Wake up.

2. Coffee stat. Way.

3. Mimosa. Never. hurts. until tomorrow.

4. These boots.

5. An attempt at a well-dressed situation.

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

On this particular day, I was hours away from the first shows of the SDW season. And, here we are days later and I believe myself to be some how still above water.

Actually no, I don't. Because like my favorite Anais Nin, I believe in the mermaid philosophy: "No fear of depths, great fear of shallow living." So above water would mean beached, and I'm more in the deep sea diving with a school of sparkly seahorse mode.

Come see what that actually looks like at tomorrow's closing shows at the Joy Theater, svp.

In the meantime, I'm also in the did she actually put that with that, and then that and also that mode.

Sure, a stripe on a plaid, with a side of leopard, a skull trimmed boot and a whistling parakeet necklace for good measure? Seems fully mermaid-meter sane to me.

Create your own wake up, coffee, mimosa, mermaid mood look below. Let's just take opposite sides of the brunch table so they don't figure us out.

p.s. my bag is from Flying Fox. Local New Orleans brand doing french cool girl right.

Holidaze & Happiness

Christmas Happies

Sending out a quick little visual love today.

I hope everyone is having an over embellished, sunny or snowy, bling-out in happiness filled day.

Don't forget to keep the bows (they'll be the perfect hair accessory after too much champagne today) and tell the ones you love how much they make you sparkle.

Even on the days you cry tears of glitter.
